Systems Administrator: SANReN

About the job:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Systems Administrator in the South African National Research Network (SANReN) team, within the National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System (NICIS). The incumbent will be responsible for commissioning/decommissioning, installing, configuring and maintaining server hardware and software platforms used by the SANReN team. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

Share responsibility (sysadmin team) for managing server administration, and supporting service/application integration to facilitate day-to-day activities of the SANReN team;
Ensure efficient performance and availability of the SANReN server systems in terms of capacity planning, upgrades, updates and repairs, configuration and installation of new software and hardware, security and backups;
Continuously compare, evaluate and select software and hardware systems that best support the strategic objectives of the SANReN technical team;
Establish server administration procedures and standards (including rigorous change management) that improve efficiency and streamline the work-flow of the SANReN technical team;
Participate in the design of products and services built on top of server platforms, and give guidance as an expert systems administrator.
Qualifications, skills and experience:

A National diploma or Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronic/computer engineering, computer/information science or information technology with at least three years’ relevant work experience as a systems administrator managing the delivery of IT services;
Must have at least one of the following industry certifications:
Unix/Linux (Red Hat, LPI, Linux Foundation, Linux+, Oracle, BSD or industry equivalent),
IT security, and/or
IT Service management (e.g. ITIL)
An in-depth understanding of systems (computer architecture, operating systems design and operations, systems software, protocols and interfaces);
Ability to identify inefficiencies, poor technical choices, and implement corrective action with minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of the users;
Ability to apply basic project management techniques to roll-out and migration tasks.
All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
