Oranjia Jewish Child and Youth Centre: Child and Youth Care Worker

Oranjia Child and Youth Centre is registered nonprofit organisation based in Cape Town. Oranjia aims to provide child and youth centered services as well as residential care to Jewish children who have been found in need under the Child Care Act.Oranjia is a residential Child and Youth Centre working with both young children and adolescents.

They  are looking for an emotionally strong, energetic and nurturing Child and Youth Care Worker to join their team.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and monitor the safety of the children in our care
See to residents’ physical, emotional, developmental and educational needs
Managing daily routine of children (mealtime, bath, bedtime)
To manage the academic program of the residents, including assisting with homework
To work closely with and facilitate contact with parents, family members and friends
To represent the development needs of the residents on various forums and meetings
Assisting with transport of children (school, extra-murals, birthday parties)
Administer medication
Manage appointments with GP’s, psychologists, psychiatrists and any other professionals who deal with the child’s emotional and developmental needs

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Matric is essential, previous experience in residential child and youth care context or similar is a distinct advantage
Registered with the SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions) is an advantage

Strong Communication skills
Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to effectively relate to people from all ages and stages of life
Ability to manage conflict in a sensitive and respectful manner
A good listener with the ability to communicate in a responsible way with a variety of residents
Nurturing and empathetic and yet able to maintain firm boundaries

Excellent Administration Skills
Excellent administrative skills with the ability to keep accurate records and compile reports.
Highly organised individual who can keep track of busy schedules, works well under pressure and able to manage stress
A confident team player who takes accountability and is thus able to work systemically with all parts of the system.
Comfortable working in a structured environment

Specific requirements
Ability to work with children in a group situation.
Ability to work with children/youth who may be challenging or have learning difficulties
The ability to administer medication in a safe and responsible manner
Knowledge of the Jewish Religion and Jewish Cultural practices is an advantage
Valid Driver’s Licence with the ability to drive a manual car
Police clearance and willingness to submit your name to the National Child Protection Register
This role will also suit educational or social science graduate wanting to gain experience in working with children
