After your NSFAS application is approved, you have a year to register at a TVET college or university. If your NSFAS funding application for the 2022 academic year was approved and you failed to register for a full year, you need to apply again.

What documents do I need for NSFAS?

ID copies of parent(s), guardian or spouse. Proof of income of parent(s), guardian or spouse (payslip or appointment letter, where applicable). If your parents, the person who supports you, or your legal guardian are retired, provide a copy of an official pension slip or bank statement showing pension payment.

NSFAS covers students who attend or hope to attend public universities and TVET colleges, but which courses does the bursary not fund?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, also known as NSFAS, administers bursaries in partnership with the government to help students reach their full potential through furthering their studies.

NSFAS does not cover the following;
_Short courses
_Courses offered at a private college or private higher education institution.
_Part-time studies
_Postgraduate studies
_Second degrees

Students who wish to pursue any of these courses, unfortunately, will not be able to receive funding from NSFAS. However, they may apply for funding from other sources.

Students need to meet the following criteria to qualify for NSFAS;

_University students
Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
Must be applying or accepted at a university.
Sassa grant beneficiaries immediately qualify.
Should have a combined household income below R350 000 per year.
Persons living with a disability should have a combined household income of R600 000 or less per annum.

_TVET Colleges

Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines.

The bursary covers registration fees, tuition, accommodation, transport, learning materials allowance and living expense allowances.

Does Nsfas fund Higher Certificate in education at Unisa?

Students studying whole qualifications, such as a degree, diploma or higher certificate programme, offered by a public university, such as Unisa, qualify for the NSFAS bursary.☑️

NSFAS will allow for one change in academic programme, so long as this is within the first two (2) years of study, and the student will be able to meet the N+2 criterion. If the student is changing from a 3-year programme to a 4-year programme, then the N = 4.

The National Students Financial Aid Schem (NSFAS) online application 2023/2024 academic year opens 15 September 2022. All those who want to apply for NSFAS online 2023 should visit www.nsfas.org.za.
