My Vote Counts (MVC) is a non-profit organisation that works towards improving transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in South Africa’s political and electoral systems. The organisation was formally registered in 2014 and has made an impact in ensuring that South Africans are a step closer to understanding who pays for our politics and focussing on ways in which we can hold our elected representatives to account.

My Vote Counts (MVC) is seeking an Intern to contribute to our research and campaign work on political party funding. MVC is an NGO based in Cape Town that works towards a South Africa where every adult has equal access to, equal control of and equal participation in our democratic process. Part of our work includes campaigning for transparency in how our politics is funded.

Contract Period: Starting January 2022 for a 12-month contract period

Remuneration: R12,000 a month

Key responsibilities

You will work closely with our Political Party Funding researcher. Your responsibilities will include:

Liaising with civil society members of the Coalition on Party Funding and convening meetings of the Coalition.
Research support
Co-writing opinion pieces
Following the Zondo Commission for relevant party funding information and developments.
Support case study research on municipal budgets and spending.
Seeking information from government departments, using the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), and
Follow up with independent candidates and political parties who have not disclosed their information
Support in organising regular community workshops, webinars, seminars and other events
Requirements

Strong research, campaigning and writing skills
Ongoing or completed postgraduate studies in politics, journalism, sociology or a related field
A demonstrated commitment to social justice
An understanding of and interest in South African politics
Strong work ethic, administrative skills, time-management skills and the ability to work well with and collaborate with others.
Basic IT skills, including skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
