DESCRIPTION
The Health Systems Trust (HST) would like to appoint two (2) laboratory technicians for the TB Reduction through Expanded Antiretroviral Treatment and Active TB Screening (TREATS) study to be conducted in Cape Town.

Positions will be based in the following communities: Idas Valley and Cloetesville (Stellenbosch), Bloekombos (Kraaifontein), Wellington (Wellington) and Delft South (Delft) to support a variety of research activities.

These are short-term (3-month) fixed-term contract positions, starting as soon as possible.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Receipt, processing, and analysis of sputum and blood samples in accordance with laboratory protocol and procedures. General maintenance of the equipment installed in the Mobile Unit Laboratory.
Support the installation, maintenance and service of the GeneXpert machine and other equipment installed in the Mobile Unit Laboratory. Execution of the Mobile Unit Laboratory. Performing quality controls on all samples in accordance with laboratory protocols and procedures. Order and inventory of medical supplies.

REQUIREMENTS

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. Minimum 2 years of experience working in a clinical / microbiological laboratory. Community research or trial research experience would be advantageous. Experience with the GeneXpert platform will be an advantage. Knowledge of TB / HIV guidelines. TB / HIV work within communities. Knowledge of the basic principles, practices and procedures of quality assurance applicable to a clinical laboratory would be advantageous. Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Good report writing skills. Good communication skills.
Fluent in English, Afrikaans and / or IsiXhosa. Valid driver’s license. Willingness to work in a mobile laboratory. Willingness to travel to attend training, meetings and events related to the project.

REMUNERATION

A salary package will be offered commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate and in line with the HST Job Qualification System.
